Blog post: Travel letter from eLearning Africa 2022 conference in Kigali, Rwanda

After two years enduring international travel bans due to the pandemic, the ICDE team, eager and energised, were finally back on the road ready to meet members and contacts abroad.

Anaïs Malbrand and Juliane Granly at eLearning Africa 2022

The event: the 15th eLearning Africa Conference

The destination: Kigali, Rwanda

The team: Anaïs Røed Malbrand and Juliane Granly

The conference warm-up was all about engagement through interactive workshops. ICDE Francophone OER Project Coordinator, Anaïs, together with ICDE members the French Digital University and the French Digital University of Engineering and Technology, hosted sessions on:

Anaïs Malbrand presenting in the workshop

Juliane Granly presenting the ENCORE+ project

  1. Hybrid teaching best practice: We explored tools, best practice and concrete initiatives to help teachers and practitioners facilitate hybrid courses. Find out more.

Francophone OER working group member, the Francophone International Organisation, also presented results from our Francophone OER Project.

  2. OER Challenges:  This session was all about supporting government and higher education institution representatives to remove obstacles challenging the implementation of OER. Juliane facilitated a discussion on the OER ENCORE+ (European Network for Catalysing Open Resources in Education) Project, looking at the ENCORE+ model, and its potential applicability in the African continent.

The session compared OER challenges in both European and African contexts. There was so much interesting content here and much more on the OER Community Model to explore further. Find out more how you can get involved in this conversation.

We had the pleasure of attending several presentations and workshops, including those with ICDE member University of Bergen (UiB) and ICDE partner, the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA). We left feeling truly inspired by the thought-provoking work being done by so many in the OFDL field. Thanks to all those known and new faces we met at our conference stand and social events, including the Nigerian Minister of Ministry of Post and New Technologies and the French Ambassador in Rwanda.

Conference highlights

We thank UNESCO’s Mark West for a refreshing keynote on e-Learning, reminding us that educational technology is not the solution to all of the world's educational challenges.

We thank Dr. Njeri Mwagiru, Senior Futurist at the Institute for Futures Research (IFR) from the Stellenbosch University in South Africa, for her passionate outlook on the future, and Lady Mariéme Jamme, Chief Sustainability Officer & Founder of iamtheCODE in the UK, for setting ambitious goals for educating girl coders. Learn more about this exciting work.

Our praise goes to the eLearning Conference organisers for such a successful conference, and our members and partners who supported ICDE in this event - the French Digital University.

The eLearning industry in Africa is growing. There is great potential to improve the way we learn and educate. We look forward to welcoming new members in the African region to our global ICDE network and bringing about this change.

Until next year’s eLearning Africa, we hope to see you in our upcoming travels!

All the best from the ICDE Team!
