To mark Global Ethics Day on 19 October, Globethics.net and ICDE jointly launched the Living Letter Campaign, promoting ethics as a transformative force in higher education. The campaign launch took place during Globethics.net’s conference Building New Bridges Together 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Living Letter campaign focuses on ethics and quality education and is linked to the ICDE Global Advocacy Campaign (GAC). Targeted advocacy messages have been printed on postcards and letters which were disseminated at the launch event and made available to all attendees. These materials can be personalised and sent to key stakeholders with the power to influence quality and inclusive access to education through flexible learning, and can also be used to promote ethics and values as a transversal subject matter in higher education.

ICDE Secretary General, Torunn Gjelsvik, gave the opening address at the launch event, where she commended Globethics.net for a well-prepared and creative campaign, adding to the many ICDE task forces around the world who advocate for Open, Flexible and Distance Learning (OFDL).

This is exactly what ICDE as a member association is aiming for – to empower our members to advocate within their local or strategically specific contexts by using the ICDE advocacy toolkit as a starting point. Together we hope to mobilise all of you and the networks that you are aiming to reach, so that our joint forces can influence relevant stakeholders and decision makers related to the education field in all parts of the world.

ICDE Board Member, Ebba Ossiannilsson, also presented at the event. She informed about the advocacy task force for Open Education Resources (OER), led by the ICDE OER Advocacy Committee.

After the presentations, participants were invited to discuss how the campaign resonates with regional interests and thematic discussions on ethics and quality education. They came up with several suggestions:

  • To create collective messages from the event itself

  • Activate student voices and encourage them to express themselves in their own words

  • Follow up with a plan to move from awareness to action

  • Targeted messages to influence policy makers who are not already convinced.
