Welcome to the 29th ICDE WORLD CONFERENCE 2023!
Mark your calendars! The 29th ICDE WORLD CONFERENCE 2023 will take place in San José, Costa Rica from 6-10 November 2023. It will be hosted by ICDE institutional member, UNED Costa Rica.
The ICDE World Conference is widely recognised as the leading international event for Open, Flexible and Distance Education, and normally attracts around 1000 participants from all over the world. The World Conference offers a forum for the presentation of cutting edge developments in the field, as well as a platform to directly impact and contribute to future international, regional and national educational policy discussions.
The conference theme will be “joining hands in peace for the Futures of Education”, with sub-themes focused on:
Global Inclusion and Social Equity through OFDL
Future Learning Organizations and Structure for Societal Transformation and Sustainability
The futures of quality open, flexible and distance learning models and technologies
Networking and Collaboration in new educational ecosystems

The ICDE World Conference provides international and regional perspectives, insight and experience from world-renowned experts, leading academics and politicians.
The ICDE World Conference enables professional development and facilitates for interaction and knowledge exchange between universities at the forefront of Open, Flexible and Distance Learning (OFDL), IGOs, NGOs, regional associations, and companies and research organisations involved in the field.
The ICDE World Conference provides access to network-building with the opportunity to make connections and strengthen existing relations with Rectors, Presidents, Vice-Chancellors, faculty members and staff from about 200 ICDE member institutions and 20 member organisations.
Background and further information
The first ICDE World Conference was held in 1938, and participants represent the research community, teaching staff, students in the OFDL field, management of educational institutions, policy makers, the public sector, media, training companies, relevant professional and international associations, and suppliers from the private sector.
The previous ICDE World Conference was hosted by Dublin City University (DCU) in 2019, and we are very much looking forward to welcome you back to the ICDE World Conference 2023 in Costa Rica!
