The University of South Africa (UNISA), an ICDE member, has approved its three-year Open Educational Resources (OER) strategy.

The strategy, which runs from 2014 to 2016, will guide the institution in the use of OERs, licensing of teaching and learning materials, and the management of its intellectual property.

Promotion of African thought, philosophy, interests and epistemology.  The guiding principles of the strategy include:

  • Commitment to the concept of openness.

  • Excellence, integrity and relevance.

  • Enhance graduate students’ skills in preparation for the global economy.

  • Social justice and fairness.

  • Assist students to access additional learning resources, become better prepared and learn independently.

The five priorities of the strategy are:

  1. Development of an effective management system for intellectual property.

  2. Establishment of an open licensing framework.

  3. Systematic integration of high quality, available OER as appropriate into courses and their subsequent release for use by others.

  4. Contribution to the global OER repository of resources.

  5. Evaluation and review of institutional policies to incorporate OER values and processes.
